Charlie Engle

Charlie Engle's life has been anything but ordinary. He pursues the improbable, and seemingly impossible, without pause. Charlie is one of the world's most accomplished ultrarunners and adventure racers. He has won grueling endurance events on nearly every continent. In 2007 he set a record by running 4,500 miles across the Sahara Desert. This transcontinental run was documented in Running the Sahara, a film produced and narrated by Matt Damon. In conjunction with the run, Charlie formed the nonprofit H2O Africa which raised $6 million for clean water projects across Saharan Africa.

While Charlie's running accomplishments are remarkable, the sport means much more to him than breaking records or winning races. Running has been a way of life and, during the darkest times, his salvation. It gave him the catalyst to break free of a decade long addiction to drugs and alcohol. In
the 26 years since Charlie took his last hit of crack cocaine, running has helped him stay sober, focused-- and alive.
Parts of Charlie's story have been featured in National Geographic Weekend, Runner's World, Huffington Post, Outside Magazine , NPR's All Things Considered and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Charlie's memoir Running Man was released by Simon and Schuster in September 2016. He currently lives with his wife in Durham, North Carolina.
